Gavaskar
February 21, 2013 - On the occasion of Harbhajan Singh's 100th Test, a look at the Indians to get there before him
Sunil Gavaskar
Matches played: 125
Runs: 10,122
Batting average: 51.12
50s/100s: 45/34
Gavaskar is one of the greatest opening batsmen of all time. His game was built around a near-perfect technique and enormous powers of concentration. He had virtually every stroke in the book but traded flair for the solidity his side needed more. Gavaskar's lasting legacy however, is not just the mountain of runs he scored for India. He earned respect for Indian cricket and he taught his team-mates the virtue of professionalism. The self-actualisation of Indian cricket began under him. |
Dilip Vengsarkar
February 21, 2013 - On the occasion of Harbhajan Singh's 100th Test, a look at the Indians to get there before him
Dilip Vengsarkar
Matches played: 116
Runs: 6868
Batting average: 42.13
50s/100s: 35/17
Vengsarkar established himself in the Indian team during the tour of Australia in 1977-78. Over the next 15 years he was one of the batting bulwarks of the side. Tall and slimly built, Vengsarkar was basically an elegant strokeplayer but on his day - which was often - he could be a tormentor of even the strongest attacks. |
Kapil Dev
February 21, 2013 - On the occasion of Harbhajan Singh's 100th Test, a look at the Indians to get there before him
Kapil Dev
Matches played: 131
Runs: 5248
Batting average: 31.05
50s/100s: 27/8
Wickets: 434
Bowling average: 29.64
Five-fors/Ten-fors: 23/2
Kapil is the greatest pace bowler India has produced, and their most complete cricketer. If he had played at any other time - not when Imran Khan, Ian Botham and Richard Hadlee were contemporaries - he would surely have been recognised as the best allrounder in the world. His greatest feats were to lead India almost jauntily, and by his all-round example, to the 1983 World Cup, and to take the world-record aggregate of Test wickets from Hadlee. To top it off he was a fierce batsman in the lower middle order. |
